City & Guilds

DLDC is approved by City & Guilds to offer teacher training qualifications.  This enables us to provide tutors that hold no formal certificates with the opportunity to undertake the qualification to meet the minimum standards required to deliver training in the Learning and Skills Sector.

DLDC currently offers the following qualifications:

Introduction to Trainer Skills (2 days) Level 3

This is a short introductory course which covers the basics of delivering training to others in organisations.  Participants will be provided with a sound introduction to the concepts of a systematic approach to training.

There are no entry requirements for the course but participants must be able to attend both days.  Assessment takes place on the second day and consists of a multi choice quiz and delivery of a 10-15 minute training session to the rest of the group.

Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS)

This qualification is the minimum requirement for tutors in the Further Education sector, which includes voluntary and community sector organisations.

This is a participative course which involves both practical and theory/knowledge elements.  The delivery of a 30 minute micro teach session forms one part of the assessment process; in addition there are seven short written assignments.  Candidates will need to successfully complete both elements in order to achieve the qualification.

Please note that there is an expectation that candidates will have to put in self study outside of the taught elements of this course.

For more information and dates, please go to our Training and Events section.

Certificate to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTLLS)
This qualification is suitable for tutors who are new to the sector in an Associate Teaching role, or for those that have completed PTLLS and want to progress and become fully qualified to teach.
DLDC is offering units of the CTLLS qualification as a 'unitised' approach to achieving the full qualification.  Candidates will need to successfully complete all units to achieve the full qualification but will be certificated for each unit they complete.

The full qualification is made up of 24 credits; the 3 mandatory units provide 18 of these and completion of the remaining 6 credits can be from a selection of optional units.

Candidates MUST already hold PTLLS prior to applying to attend the CTLLS course as this is the first mandatory unit of 6 credits.  Candidates MUST also have access to 30 hours teaching as they will need to be observed for a minimum of 3 hours throughout the qualification.

The units on offer with DLDC are:

Planning & Enabling Learning (mandatory 9 credits) and Equality & Diversity (optional 6 credits)

If funding allows, DLDC hopes to offer the final mandatory unit to allow candidates to fully complete the whole qualification.

Teaching qualifications – the Further Education (FE) framework

In September 2007, new regulations were introduced for teachers* in the FE sector which includes the voluntary and community sector.

Anyone wishing to teach from this date and who did not already hold a teaching qualification needed to comply with the regulations.

The new framework consists of three qualifications which are as follows:

* teachers is a generic term and includes – trainers, tutors, facilitators, assessors

Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS)

This is the starting point for most new tutors and is a 60 hour (6 credit) course.  PTLLS can be offered as a ‘stand alone’ course/qualification and allows those new to tutoring to understand the basic methodology of delivering training.

It should be noted that whilst DLDC accepts tutors with PTLLS to deliver on accredited learning; tutors have an obligation to complete the CTLLS or DTLLS qualification within 5 years of achieving PTLLS.

Failure to comply could result in tutors no longer being able to deliver accredited training.

Certificate/Diploma to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTLLS/DTLLS)

Tutors that progress from PTLLS can choose one of two routes depending on their teaching role and therefore need to understand which route is most appropriate.  The two teaching roles are as follows:

Associate teacher

“‘associate teaching role’ means a teaching role that carries significantly less than the full range of teaching responsibilities ordinarily carried out in a full teaching role (whether on a full-time, part-time, fractional, fixed term, temporary or agency basis) and does not require the teacher to demonstrate an extensive range of knowledge, understanding and application of curriculum development, curriculum innovation or curriculum delivery strategies”

Full teacher

“‘full teaching role’ means a teaching role that carries the full range of teaching responsibilities (whether on a full-time, part-time, fractional, fixed term, temporary or agency basis) and requires the teacher to demonstrate an extensive range of knowledge, understanding and application of curriculum development, curriculum innovation or curriculum delivery strategies”

More information about the reforms can be found in this document.

Continuous Professional Development (CPD)

In addition to gaining the correct teaching qualifications; there is a requirement that all tutors register with the Institute for Learning (IfL).  This is part of the regulations and tutors must complete and submit a record of their ongoing CPD annually in order to remain registered.
